Reframing Climate Change Anxiety: For Children.

Writer's picture: Emma CharltonEmma Charlton

Climate change anxiety can deeply impact children, filling them with fear and uncertainty about the future. Constant exposure to alarming narratives can create a sense of helplessness, leading to stress, sleep disturbances, and even reluctance to engage in everyday activities. When children are taught that catastrophe is inevitable, they may struggle to develop resilience and optimism. Instead of fostering fear, it’s important to help them focus on practical solutions, personal empowerment, and the natural adaptability of our world. Encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and a balanced perspective allows children to grow with confidence rather than anxiety.

Imagine a little boat sailing on the ocean. If all it ever hears is that storms are coming, it might never leave the shore, too afraid of the waves. But the ocean has calm days too, and the boat is built to float, adjust its sails, and keep moving forward. By learning how to navigate the waters instead of fearing them, the little boat can journey with confidence, knowing that change is just part of the adventure.
