Book Review - The Coddling of the American Mind

The Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathon Haidt and Greg Lukianoff delves into the profound transformations that have taken place within American universities in recent years. Through meticulous research, the authors dissect the myriad factors that have contributed to the challenges currently plaguing many academic institutions. While drawing some parallels with the themes explored in The Anxious Generation, this book also scrutinises the growing trend of politicisation among students and educators, as well as the escalating polarization within different factions. By elucidating how these dynamics have sparked severe repercussions such as cancel culture and the dismissal of professors under the mounting pressures exerted by students, the book sheds light on the alarming realities unfolding within university campuses. Despite not having first-hand experience of university life, delving into this text proved to be an engrossing journey that underscored the pressing issues confronting higher education institutions today.
